How to Use Past Papers Effectively

Past papers are one of the best tools for exam prep—if you use them the right way. Here’s how.

Do them under exam conditions

Set a timer and avoid notes. Replicating exam pressure helps you manage time and spot weak spots. Do this at least a few times before the real exam.

Mark them properly

Use the marking scheme (we have them on PastPrep) and mark strictly. Be honest with yourself—only then can you see what you need to improve.

Review every mistake

Don’t just total your score. For each wrong or partial answer, understand why the correct answer is right and how to get there next time. Use PastPrep AI to ask “why?” for any question.

Space them out

Mix past papers with topic revision. Doing one paper after another without revisiting weak topics is less effective than alternating practice with targeted study.

Use grade thresholds

Check the grade thresholds for each paper to see what raw mark typically corresponds to your target grade. That gives you a clear target when practicing.
